Ideally, trees awaiting sale would be stored at 40-50°
F with a relative humidity of 90%. Try the following tips to make your
own conditions as close as possible to the ideal:
- Avoid storing or displaying trees in the sun.
- Insulate trees from hot asphalt or concrete. Moistened wood
shavings or sawdust can serve as insulation.
- Store trees on pallets covered by shadecloth or burlap, or in a
cool storage building.
- To prevent heat build-up, create several inches of air space
between the trees and the cover cloth when storing trees under
shadecloth.
- Keep stored trees moist by frequent sprinkling. Avoid using water
containing heavy amounts of chlorine.
- Leave your stored trees baled to reduce the amount of surface
exposed to the elements.
- Park trucks or trailers holding stored trees in the shade.
- Unless freezing conditions exist, display trees in water after
making a fresh cut on the end.
- Make a fresh cut on all trees before they leave your lot. Advise
your customer to put the tree in water within 5-6 hours.
- In cold climates, protect Douglas-fir trees from temperatures
below 20° F.
